Hula Girl Birthday Card

I was asked to make a card for my niece's birthday.  As my mom and I discussed image options, the hula girl from My Favorite Things seemed perfect since my niece lives in Hawai'i!

I wanted to give her a sun-kissed complexion, so I had to change the colors I typically use for her skin tone.  Using my Copic Ciao markers, I used E53 and E33.  Then if was just a matter of finding the right tropical combination for the flower lei and hibiscus in her hair.  I did not want to introduce too many colors, so I kept to orange and a warm magenta pink.  A touch of pink to her cheeks, and I was done!

After fussy-cutting around the image, I worked on placement.  Unfortunately, I neglected to take pictures of how I created the sun in the background but I will recreate this technique in another post soon.  I used distress ink for the sun and added some to the lawn in the foreground to give it a bit more dimension and depth.

I stamped the sentiment in a pink to match the hibiscus and lei and attached the hula girl to the front using foam tape.  Before mounting the panel to the card base, I decided to use a border stamp from an older Avery Elle stamp set I have.  I used a beautiful blue metallic ink to repeat the border pattern over the entire card front.  The pattern reminds me of waves.

I hope my sweet niece enjoys her birthday wishes from her Nona, as much as this auntie enjoyed making it for her.  xo
